Phenology Wheel Update: April
Adding the latest Butterfly of the Month
April was a wonderfully busy month in the tiny studio (new drawing adventures ahead) and suddenly we are well into May and I haven’t updated my phenology wheel.
If you happened to miss the previous three monthly updates, let me fill you in: a phenology wheel is a sort of circular nature journal. It records the changes that happen, over the course of a year, in one place. You can focus on anything - birds, wild plants, a specific tree or landscape - and I chose butterflies. Each month, I draw a butterfly I’ve seen in the fields around my cabin. When I spot one I’ve not yet seen this year, I look around for its host plant to include in the drawing. And when my butterfly is finished, I look up its caterpillar and draw that, too.
Gulf fritillaries arrived in April. Join me while I add one to my wheel, and think about making a wheel of your own. A pattern and more info about getting started are included in an earlier post.

Beautiful. I've noticed your lettering technique, like with the meadowlark post, is similar to landscape architecture/architecture practice. The painter/author Eric Sloan, also had a precise style of lettering. Was your lettering technique influenced by either? You might find this interesting, if you don't know about it. A movie in the mid 90s called Angels and Insects was based on a novella by A.S. Byatt (Antonia Susan Drabble). The movie featured naturalist journaling, which made it a favorite of mine.
